Don’t submit a customer support ticket when your house is on fire 🔥

These are real quotes from folks at real career crossroads.

They valiantly tried to DIY their way through it—and eventually came to me to design a career they actually love:

“My therapist doesn’t even know what a Google Doc is.”
“The stack of self-help books on my nightstand is about to topple over.”
“ChatGPT said I should be an astronaut or a veterinarian. But I’m a Product Manager?!”

If you can land a dream job, start a business, make your work life sustainable, navigate change, or get promoted on your own or with existing resources—amazing! I’m all about keeping your margins as low as possible.

But too often, folks use the wrong tools, get discouraged when they don’t work, and wait until things are burning down to get the right kind of support.

Here are five common career support tools folks turn to, and why coaching gets you there faster and with more clarity, confidence, and (honestly) fun:

📚 Books

Perks: Cheap! Quick! Like having a thought leader in your home!

Pitfall: Deep dive on one thesis, so you end up stitching together several just to get traction.

Coaching Wins: An end-to-end process: deep exploration, clarity on direction, job search or business-building strategy, and a plan to actually thrive in your next chapter (not rinse and repeat a few months later).

🎓 Online Courses

Perks: Low cost and self-paced.

Pitfall: The completion rate for online courses is shockingly low—only 5-15% finish.

Coaching Wins: Accountability. If you say you want it, I’ll be your biggest cheerleader and a steady hand on your back, gently nudging you until you make it happen.

🤖 ChatGPT

Perks: Free, fast, 24/7 access to infinite info.

Pitfall: It can’t see or feel your tone, sense your energy, or understand your lived context.

Coaching Wins: Real-time feedback, intuitive hits, and nuance—plus being a fellow human being who can empathize and validate your experience.

🛋 Therapy

Perks: Deep transformation grounded in how your past shapes your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors today.

Pitfall: They don't need to be plugged into how AI is impacting your industry, the latest recruitment and job market trends, or the realities of modern work.

Coaching Wins: Often called “work or job therapy,” coaching blends internal work and strategy to get you where you want to go.

👩‍💼 Your Manager

Perks: Built-in support. Hopefully you already have regular 1:1s with this person!

Pitfall: They have to balance business goals with your needs—and may not be a neutral sounding board.

Coaching Wins: A fully you-centered space to explore whether to stay, go, shift, or grow (without the politics).

“Weird times.” That’s what my CTO friend and I kept saying on one of our classic LA rollerblade catch-ups this weekend. We were talking about AI. That thing that went from niche buzzword to novelty toy to personal assistant to existential threat in just a decade. Yes, we’re living in weird times. But I’m not worried. Not because my head’s buried in analog sand. Because I’m curiously plugged into how this is unfolding and calmly, creatively iterating on how I work and deliver value to my...

Hey! Grace Fabian here (formerly Vigeant or Epstein depending on when we met). Same career coach, same obsession with your professional fulfillment. Just a zhuzhed-up sender line. I caught up with a career coaching client recently. She landed a perfect-fit leadership role during our work together and is now renegotiating comp and title (cuz she’s been kicking even more ass than they hired her for). Like most of my clients, she’s a seasoned pro. Not her first rodeo. She’s been the job seeker...

On Monday, I looked at my calendar and blurted out, “Ugh, I’m obsessed with this week!” Far cry from my stress-filled Subway commutes, back when I was a walking bag of cortisol. I coach people to design careers they love. I shouldn’t be in business if I don’t have a career that I love—and continually iterate as I grow and the world shifts. So what made me audibly celebrate my week? Well… My clients are ridiculously cool. Kicked off the week with a creative tech wiz, a comms prof, a...
